Exterior house painters in Auckland repaint the walls, trims, sills, fascias, doors and window frames of your home, and do the preparation that makes the paint last. Published local prices put a typical family home at $12,000 to $22,000 or more, from about $7,000 for a small single-storey house. The real price depends on the size, the condition of the old paint, the height and access. This page covers what an exterior job includes, which finishes suit which surface, and how weather shapes the schedule. For the full repaint process, see house repaints in Auckland.

What finish should exterior walls and trims have?
Weatherboards are usually painted in a low sheen or matt exterior acrylic, which hides small marks in the timber and weathers evenly. Trims, sills and doors usually get a semi-gloss or gloss, which is harder wearing and easier to wipe clean. Plaster and stucco take a masonry paint that copes with fine cracks. Your painter names the product and finish in the quote.
Low sheen on the walls with a gloss trim is the classic Auckland combination. It gives the house crisp edges without the walls looking shiny in low sun.
Can you paint a house a dark colour in Auckland?
Yes, with care. Dark colours absorb more heat, which can make old painted timber move, crack or blister. Resene recommends care with dark colours on previously painted timber and in exposed spots, and its CoolColour versions of dark shades reflect more of the sun's heat, so they stay cooler than a standard dark paint.
The measure most paint makers use is light reflectance value, or LRV: how much light a colour reflects, from 0 for black to 100 for white. Resene points out that LRV only describes how a colour looks, not how hot it gets, which is why a CoolColour dark can be acceptable where a standard dark is not. For palettes, see exterior colour schemes for Auckland homes.
When is the best time of year to paint outside?
Spring and autumn are usually the easiest seasons for exterior painting in Auckland, because the days are mild and settled. Resene's ideal conditions are about 15 to 20 degrees with a gentle breeze. Summer works if painters avoid surfaces in full afternoon sun, and winter is possible, but short days and morning dew leave fewer good hours.
Painters usually follow the shade round the house: the west side in the morning, the east side in the afternoon. Rain within a few hours of painting can mark the finish, so a good painter watches the forecast and moves the schedule rather than pushing on.
What does exterior house painting cost in Auckland?
Published prices for 2026 put a small single-storey house of about 120 square metres at $7,000 to $12,000 or more, a typical 150 to 200 square metre family home at $12,000 to $22,000 or more, and two-storey villas and bungalows at $15,000 to $30,000 or more. Published per-square-metre rates run at about $50 to $90 or more of wall.
Two storeys add scaffolding, failed paint adds preparation hours, and rot adds repairs. See house painting prices in Auckland for each extra.
FAQs
Do exterior painters paint the roof as well?
Usually not as part of the same price. Roof painting needs its own cleaning, treatment and roof coatings, and many house painters leave it to roof specialists. If the roof is due, ask for it to be quoted at the same time, because sharing the scaffolding can save money on both jobs.
How often should the outside of a house be repainted?
It depends on the surface, the colour, the exposure and how well the last job was prepared. Paint on sunny north and west walls and near the coast wears fastest. Rather than a fixed number of years, check each spring for chalking, cracking and flaking, and wash the house regularly so the paint lasts longer.
Can I stay in the house while it is painted outside?
Yes. Exterior painting happens outside, so you can live in the house as normal. Expect some noise during scraping and sanding, windows that stay shut while their frames dry, and scaffolding around the house for the length of the job. The painter will need a tap and a power point.
Do I need to wash the house before the painter comes?
No. Washing is part of the preparation, and the painter does it with the right cleaner for mould and lichen, then lets the surface dry before painting. It is worth asking how they wash: high-pressure water on soft timber or old paint can damage it, and on lead paint it spreads the dust.
