Areas we cover

Repaints inside and out across the Auckland region. The painter comes to you.

Second Coat covers the Auckland region, from the Hibiscus Coast in the north to Pukekohe in the south. There is no walk-in office. Tell us your suburb and what needs painting, and a painter who works in your area comes out, looks at the house and gives you a written quote. Below are the parts of Auckland we cover, with the house types you see most in each.

  • Central and the isthmus. Grey Lynn, Westmere, Point Chevalier, Mount Albert, Kingsland, Three Kings, Royal Oak, One Tree Hill and Greenlane. Villas and bungalows, many weatherboard, some with heritage or special character rules.
  • East Auckland and the bays. Meadowbank, St Heliers, Kohimarama, Glendowie, Panmure, Mount Wellington, Half Moon Bay and Beachlands. Coastal homes exposed to salt and wind, and a mix of brick, plaster and weatherboard.
  • North Shore and the coast. Northcote, Milford, Castor Bay, Browns Bay, Torbay and the Hibiscus Coast. Weatherboard and plaster homes from many decades, many on sloping sections that need scaffolding.
  • West Auckland. Hobsonville, Massey, Glen Eden, Kelston, Avondale, Blockhouse Bay and Mount Roskill. Brick and tile homes, weatherboard bungalows and newer cladding in the growing suburbs.
  • South Auckland. Takanini, Pukekohe and the suburbs between. Newer homes with plaster and fibre cement cladding alongside traditional weatherboard houses.

The house usually decides the job, not the suburb

Villas and bungalows need the most preparation and often have lead in the old paint layers. Brick homes mostly need cleaning, and painting them is a long-term choice. Plaster and fibre cement need cracks repaired and a paint made for the surface. Coastal homes wear faster on the sea side. Each one is priced on what it needs.

Do you cover my suburb?

Very likely, if you are in the Auckland region. The list above is a sample, not the limit. Send the form with your suburb, and a painter who works in your area will contact you. If your suburb is outside the area painters cover, we'll tell you straight away rather than leave you waiting.

Heritage streets and character areas

Some Auckland properties have heritage controls or sit in special character areas, and changes to the outside of the house can need approval, including some colour changes. Auckland Council has an online check for heritage controls on a property. A like-for-like repaint usually needs no consent, but check before a big colour change.

On houses built before the 1980s, Health New Zealand advises presuming lead in the old paint until a test shows otherwise, which is common in the central villa suburbs. Your painter plans the preparation around it.

FAQs

Do painters charge more in some parts of Auckland?

Prices depend far more on the house than the suburb: its size, the condition of the paint, the repairs, the height and access. Steep sections and two storeys need scaffolding wherever they are. Coastal homes may need more preparation on the exposed sides. See house painting prices in Auckland for the published ranges.

Can a painter see the house while I'm at work?

For an exterior quote, often yes, if the painter can walk round the outside safely and you have told them about any gates, dogs or alarms. For interiors someone needs to be home. Say what suits you in the form, and the painter will arrange a time.

Do you paint holiday homes and rentals?

Yes. Rentals and holiday homes are painted the same way as any other house. For a rental, mention in the form if there are tenants, so the painter can plan access and give them notice. Landlords often book interior repaints between tenancies.
